Abstract

The emergence of Islam and Christianity has gradually discarded most aspects of the Chamba traditions. This has greatly altered the history and traditions of the Chamba in Ganye Chiefdom. However, this paper addresses the impact of Islam and Christianity on the Chamba of Ganye Chiefdom under the following sub-topics-: impact on the unity between various Chamba clans, impact on Chamba settlement pattern, impact on culture such as names, mode of dressing, marriage, burial, respect for elders, impact on the use of language, impact on the traditional Chamba educational system and Chamba architecture. It also looks at the impact on Chamba economics system such as animal husbandry, Chamba traditional food/ drinks, impact on division of labor in pre-colonial Chamba communities and impact on Chamba traditional health care system. The paper explores primary and secondary sources of data collection and analysis. Primary sources include moral interview. While secondary sources comprise textbooks journals, magazines etc. The paper conclude that lack of respect for elders, indecent dressing and other immoral practices are associated with the effect of exposure of Chamba youths particularly to the western way of life.
